Abstract

Paper is made from a suspension of fibres containing a chemical agent that can increase the viscosity of water and is substantially non-substantive towards the fibres. The agent is hydroxyethylcellulose or a mixture thereof with one or more of sodium, potassium or ammonium polyacrylate or a microbiological polysaccharide. It is used in an amount sufficient to increase the viscosity of the water alone to 20 to 500 centipoise at 20 DEG C. Substantially the whole of it remains in the white water, which is recycled with little or no further addition of the agent. The fibres may be derived from softwoods, hardwoods, straws or bagasse, or may be of polyacrylonitrile, rayon, polyester or nylon. The agent may be incorporated before or after beating, but before the suspension is directed to the paper-machine wire. The slurry may also contain wet-strength resins, rosin size, alum, starches or colorants, but not such as would gel the chemical agent.
