Abstract

The process of treating mineral wool according to the parent Specification is modified by adding to the mixture, prior to the addition of the resin-precipitating agent, a quantity of cellulose fibre pulp, preferably Kraft paper pulp, the amount of resin present being at least 2 per cent, and preferably not more than 3 per cent, of the mineral wool. The pulp, the dry weight of which is from 1-5 per cent of the mineral wool, may be mixed with the wool before the addition of the resin emulsion. According to an example, 12.5 lbs. dry weight Kraft paper pulp beaten to 90 degrees Canadian fineness and suspended in 5,000 lbs. of water containing 12.5 lbs. of bentonite, is mixed with 250 lbs. of mineral wool containing at least 2 per cent of starch and a petroleum resin, prepared as described in Specification 550,833, [Group V], and 19 lbs. of alkyd resin emulsion containing 7.5 lbs. of resin is mixed in, the resin being then precipitated by the addition of 1.25 lbs. of alum dissolved in 50 lbs. of water. The mix is then poured into moulds and dried.ALSO:The process of treating mineral wool according to the parent Specification is modified by adding to the mixture, prior to the addition of the resinprecipitating agent, a quantity of cellulose fibre pulp, preferably Kraft paper pulp, the amount of resin present being at least 2 per cent. and preferably not more than 3 per cent., of the mineral wool.
