Abstract
778,791. Sizing and loading paper pulp. WARREN CO., S. D. July 1, 1955 [Aug. 11, 1954 ; June 13, 1955], No. 19096/55. Class 96. Finely-divided particles of mineral filler, e.g. clay, calcium carbonate, magnesium carbonate, talc, or titanium dioxide, are coated with a manno-galacten, or glycomannan, e.g. from locust bean gum, guar gum, flame tree seeds, huisache shrub, Kentucky coffee tree, mesquite, palo verde, or aroid corms, e.g. by adding an aqueous, swelled colloidal dispersion to dry filler, or to an aqueous filler suspension or adding the latter to dry coating material, and intimately mixed with cellulose fibre pulp, e.g. cotton or wood pulp which is then formed into paper containing 2 to 50 per cent of filler, the particles of which may be from <SP>1</SP>/ 10 to 40 microns in diameter and which may be coated entirely or in spots with the colloid material which may be in the proportion <SP>1</SP>/ 20 to <SP>1</SP>/ 2000 of the filler. Starch may also be present, and the pH value may be adjusted, e.g. from 3.0 to 12.5, e.g. by adding aluminium sulphate, sodium hydroxide, potassium hydroxide, or sodium carbonate.
