1311386 Fibrous compositions for making paper CENTRE TECHNIQUE DE L'INDUSTRIE DES PAPIERS CARTONS ET CELLULOSES 19 April 1971 [5 March 1970] 23348/71 Heading D2B Fibrous compositions for making paper comprise paper-making fibres having particles of methylene-urea fixed thereto by in situ precipitation of the particles in the fibrillae of the fibres. The compositions may be prepared by adding to an aqueous suspension of papermaking fibres a mixture of urea and formaldehyde in a molar ratio of formaldehyde to urea of less than or equal to 1:1, followed by a strong acid catalyst to reduce the pH to less than 2 and to cause precipitation of methyleneurea particles, and neutralising the excess acid to raise the pH to above 4. The fibrous suspension may be beaten either before or after formation of the methylene-urea precipitate.
