Abstract

A urea-formaldehyde resin for giving high strength to paper has a solubility such that the whole of the resin remains in solution when one volume of a neutral 50 per cent (by weight) aqueous solution of resin is added to 100 volumes of water, and the whole of the resin is precipitated when one volume of said resin solution is added to 100 volumes of beater pulp at pH 4.5. The resin may be precipitated on the unsheeted fibres by acidifying the beater furnish with alum, for example, which also accelerates the cure of the resin. Curing may also be promoted by the addition of formaldehyde fixing agents such as urea, thiourea, melamine, guanidine, &c. According to examples, the resin is made by reacting 1.8 or 2.38 mols. of formaldehyde with 1 mol. of urea and the product is neutralized to pH 7. The resin solution has a viscosity less than 100 seconds at 100 DEG C.-preferably between 35 and 50 seconds-when measured by a pipette delivering 25 c.c. of water in 25 seconds at 25 DEG C. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the use of resins made by reacting aldehydes such as acetaldehyde, propionaldehyde, butyraldehyde, benzaldehyde, furfural, paraformaldehyde and trioxane with amino compounds such as methyl urea, acetyl urea, cyanamide, dicyanodiamide, biuret, semicarbazide and aniline. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
