Abstract

Water-miscible methylol melamine alkyl ether resins are prepared by pre-condensing 1 mol. of melamine with 2 to 10 mols. formaldehyde in water at pH 7 to 10 for at least 30 minutes and at most till 1 part of resin clouds in 2 parts water at 20 DEG C. and the precondensate solution, without variation of the water content is etherified with 0.8 to 1.5 mols. of methanol or ethanol per mol. of water present in the solution in the presence of 0.001 to 0.02 equivalents of an acid having a pK below 5 at a temperature between 50 DEG C. and boiling point (e.g. under reflux). The melamine may be partially replaced by other amino-s-triazines, urea or dicyanodiamide; in Example 5 acetoguanamine is so used. In all the examples etherification is effected with methanol in the presence of oxalic acid. It is stated that products which initially are partly incompatible with water become fully miscible after storage for between 1 and 30 days. Specification 763,244 is referred to.
