Abstract

Thermosetting resins are prepared by condensing under heat formaldehyde with urea, thiourea, or cyanamide polymers, alone or in admixture, or by condensing methylol compounds derived from these substances, with or without the addition of one or more of these substances, as such, substantially in the absence of water but in the presence, as plasticiser, of one or more monoethers of polyhydric alcohols containing the group CH2OR, where R is aryl, aralkyl, or alkyl of not less than 4 C atoms, the total amount of such monoethers being not more than one-third molecule for each molecule of formaldehyde or for each equivalent methylol group employed in the condensation. Monoethers specified are the mono-n-butyl, mono-phenyl, mono-cresyl and the monobenzyl ethers of glycerol. Condensation may be effected by fusion of the materials under heat, if desired with acid or alkaline condensing agents. Fillers may be incorporated during condensation or subsequently, and the resin-forming components may be added to the plasticiser in portions. The plasticised resins may be used in hot-press moulding compositions together with fillers, lubricants, pigments and curing accelerators, or dissolved in water or aqueous solvents such as formalin or water-alcohol mixtures to give cold-or hot-setting adhesives in conjunction with hardening agents, fillers and extenders, or reacted with monohydric alcohols to etherify the residual methylol groups to give lacquer resins. In examples: (1) dimethylol urea, thiourea, monobenzyl glyceryl ether and woodflour are compounded on a heated roll-mill, with lithopone and zinc stearate; (2) dimethylol urea is added in portions to a monocresyl glyceryl ether under heat; a glue for leather and wood is obtained by adding the product to hot water and may be set with phosphoric acid; (3) urea, melamine, paraformaldehyde, monobenzyl glyceryl ether, woodflour, lithopone and zinc stearate are compounded on hot rolls; (4) dimethylol urea is fused with monobenzyl glyceryl ether, and the product is dissolved in n-butyl alcohol containing formic acid.
