Abstract

Water soluble aminotriazine-aldehyde resins are produced by reacting a hydrophobic aminotriazine-aldehyde condensation product with an alkali metal sulphite under alkaline conditions. Sodium sulphite may be used but the bisulphite, hydrosulphite or metabisulphite is preferred. The products may be syrupy or may be dried to powder form. They may be used as aqueous dispersions, e.g. for improving the wet strength of paper (see Group VIII), the crease-resistance of cellulosic fabrics (see Group IV (c)), for bleaching leather (see Group VIII), or for adhesives if desired with customary fillers and hardeners. In examples: (1) a hydrophobic product from 1 mol. melamine and 3 mols. formaldehyde at pH 8.5 was refluxed with 0.3 mols. of sodium bisulphite and water. Product is a clear gel which may be dispersed in water; (2) the product of example (1) was spray dried. Examples (3) and (4) are similar to (1) but use sodium metabisulphite, and example (6) describes a plywood adhesive paste consisting of the resin powder of example 2, water, wood flour and oxalic acid. Specifications 595,366 and 611,244 are referred to.ALSO:Water-soluble amino-triazine-aldehyde resins (see Group IV (a)), are used for the treatment of cellulosic fabrics. In example 7 cotton cloth was impregnated with an aqueous solution containing triethanolamine phosphate and a melamine-formaldehyde condensation product which has been rendered water-soluble by treatment with an alkali metal sulphite under alkaline conditions, and was dried. It had improved shrink and crease resistance.
