Abstract
A stable, water-soluble resin is obtained by condensing urea, formaldehyde and an aliphatic polyamine in aqueous solution in the presence of a monobasic acid other than formic acid and a cocondensable compound which will introduce anionic groups into the resin, present in a molar ratio of less than 1 with reference to the amino groups of the polyamine, and then, neutralizing and drying the product. The condensation may be carried out in three stages, (1) an alkaline precondensation, (2) an acid main condensation, and (3) a neutral to weakly alkaline after-condensation. For each mol. of urea there may be 2.2 to 4 moles of formaldehyde, 0.1 to 1 mole (with reference to nitrogen) of polyamine and 0.05 to 0.5 mole of compound which introduces anionic groups. The resin may be dried by spray drying. In examples, resins are obtained from urea, formaldehyde, ethylene diamine and diethylene triamine using glycocoll, sodium bisulphite, casein, g -aminobutyric acid and sodium g -aminobutyrate as compounds, which introduce anionic groups, and hydrochloric acid as the monobasic acid. Other compounds which introduce anionic groups listed are alanine, glutamic acid, aminocaproic acid, p-aminobenzoic acid, taurine, sulphanilic acid and sodium and potassium sulphites.ALSO:The wet strength of paper is improved by incorporating in the paper a stable, water-soluble resin obtained by condensing urea, formaldehyde and an aliphatic polyamine in aqueous solution in the presence of a monobasic acid other than formic acid and a cocodensable compound which will introduce anionic groups into the resin, present in a molar ratio of less than 1 with reference to the amino groups of the polyamine, and then neutralizing and drying the resin products. The condensation may be carried out in three stages, (1) an alkaline precondensation, (2) an acid main condensation, and (3) a neutral to weakly alkaline after-condensation. For each mol of urea there may be 2.2 to 4 mols of formaldehyde, 0.1 to 1 mole (with reference to nitrogen) of polyamine and 0.05 to 0.5 mole of compound which introduces anionic groups. The resin may be dried by spray drying. In examples papers are prepared from bleached and unbleached sulphite cellulose and bleached and unbleached soda cellulose, alum and resins obtained from urea, formaldehyde, ethylene diamine and diethylene triamine using glycocoll, sodium bisulphite, casein, g -aminobutyric acid and sodium g -aminobutyrate as compounds which introduce anionic groups, and hydrochloric acid as the monobasic acid. Other compounds which introduce anionic groups listed are alanine, glutamic acid, aminocaproic acid, p-aminobenzoic acid, taurine, sulphanilic acid and sodium and potassium sulphites.
