Abstract
An aqueous solution of a thermosetting resin with a relatively high dry solids content for use as an adhesive resin to confer high wet strength to paper is produced by reacting an aliphatic dicarboxylic acid with a polyalkylene polyamine to form a polyamido polyamine, which is subsequently reacted with epichlorhydrin, in which the first reaction is carried out by using a molar ratio of aliphatic dicarboxylic acid to polyalkylene polyamine between 1 : 1.0 and 1 : 1.2 and continuing until the viscosity of a 50 percent aqueous solution of the resulting polyamido polyamine at 25 degrees Celsius lies between 400 - 1000 cP and the second reaction is carried out by using epichlorhydrin in the ratio 1.6 1.7 moles per mole of the secondary amino groups present in the polyamido polyamide and continuing until the viscosity of a 15 percent aqueous solution of the resulting product at 25 degrees Celsius lies between 30 150 cP.
