Abstract
A water-soluble cationic thermosetting resin is prepared by reacting a saturated aliphatic dicarboxylic acid with a polyalkylene polyamine, containing two primary amine groups and at least one secondary amine group, to form a long-chain water-soluble polyamide, and then reacting this polyamide with epichlorohydrin. Preferably one mole of acid containing 3 to 10 carbon atoms is reacted with 0.8 to 1.4 moles of polyalkylene polyamine, and the product reacted with 0.5 to 1.8 moles of epichlorohydrin per mole of secondary amine groups. A composition for coating paper or other bases (see Division B2) comprises the above resin, a hydrophilic colloid and a pigment. The hydrophilic colloid may be polyvinyl alcohol, starch, starch ether, sodium carboxymethyl - hydroxyethyl - cellulose, chlorinated starch, dextrin, sodium carboxymethylcellulose, methylol-polyacrylamide, and polyacrylamide. The pigment may be colloidal silica, calcium silicate, barium sulphate, titanium dioxide, clay or mixtures of these, with or without zinc oxide. The coating may also include an inorganic salt such as zinc acetate, zinc chloride, zinc phenolsulphonate, zinc sulphamate, zinc fluosilicate, alum or salts of lead, calcium, manganese, cerium or lanthanum. The plate may be made by coating a base surface with an aqueous coating composition comprising the pigment, the hydrophilic colloid and the water-soluble cationic resin, and reacting the hydrophilic colloid with the resin to form an insoluble coating. The inorganic salt, if used, may be incorporated in the coating composition, or applied to the coating before it is dried. Specification 667,154, U.S.A. Specifications 2,244,325, 2,597,872, 2,919,191 and 2,926,154 are referred to.ALSO:A planographic printing plate comprises a base, e.g. of paper, and an insolubilized coating thereon, which comprises a pigment and the reaction product of a hydrophilic colloid and a water-soluble cationic thermosetting resin. This resin is prepared by reacting a saturated aliphatic dicarboxylic acid with a polyalkylenepolyamine, containing two primary amine groups and at least one secondary amine group, to form a long-chain water-soluble polyamide, and then reacting this polyamide with epichlorohydrin. The hydrophilic colloid may be polyvinyl alcohol, starch, starch ether, sodium carboxymethyl-hydroxyethyl-cellulose, chlorinated starch, dextrin, sodium carboxymethylcellulose, methylol-polyacrylamide, and polyacrylamide. The pigment may be colloidal silica, calcium silicate, barium sulphate, titanium dioxide, clay or a mixtures of these, with or without zinc oxide. The coating may also include an inorganic salt such as zinc acetate, zinc chloride, zinc phenolsulphonate, zinc sulphamate, zinc fluosilicate, alum or salts of lead, calcium, manganese, cerium or lanthanum. The plate may be made by coating a base surface with an aqueous coating composition comprising the pigment, the hydrophilic colloid and the water-soluble cationic resin, and reacting the hydrophilic colloid the resin to form an insoluble coating. The inorganic salt, if used, may be incorporated in the coating composition, or applied to the coating before it is dried. Specification 667,154 and U.S.A.
