Abstract

896,010. Printing surfaces. WARREN CO., S. D. June 13,1960 [Sept. 21,1959], No. 20658/60. Class 100(2) A planographic printing plate comprises a paper base and a coating thereon having a planographic printing surface, the coating comprising an insoluble hydrophilic adhesive and a finely divided inert mineral pigment, and having therein capillary interstices and pores containing a water-soluble mixture of a divalent metal salt and a multivalent metal salt, these salts being present in substantial excess of the quantity capable of reacting with the adhesive, and the weight ratio of the divalent metal salt to the multivalent metal salt lying between 1 to 9 and 9 to 1. The divalent metal salt consists of zinc acetate or zinc formate, and the multivalent malarl salt consists of aluminium acetate, chloride, formate, or sulphate, or cerium chloride, ferric formate, or zirconium acetate. The coating includes insolubilized casein or carboxymethyl cellulose adhesive. In one example, the paper base is made from wood fibres mixed with rosin size, melamine-formaldehyde resin and alum, and is washed with casein formaldehyde, dried and calendered. It is then coated on the non-printing side with clay, casein, and dimethylol urea to prevent curling, and the printing side is coated with a pigment of clay and titanium dioxide, sodium methyl cellulose, melamineformaldehyde resin, a wetting agent, tributyl phosphate, water, and phosphoric acid. The latter coating, after drying, is then coated with an aqueous solution containing zinc formate, aluminium formate, butanol, a wetting agent, and water. The simple metal salts may be replaced by double salts. The quantity of the soluble metal salts left in the surface pores of the printing plate is in substantial excess of that used . up by reaction with the adhesive, the excess being free to react with an ingredient of the aqueous lithographic solutions which are normally applied to the plate in use.
