766,532. Printing surfaces. TICKNER, A., (Columbia Ribbon & Carbon Manufacturing Co., Inc.). Oct. 9, 1951, No. 23502/51. Class 100(2) Preliminary preparation of planographic plates: A planographic printing plate is prepared by forming a masking film around the image consisting of an insoluble compound of carboxymethyl cellulose. The plate may consist of metal, plastic, or paper provided it is of sufficient wet strength when processed and sufficiently ink receptive. The masking film is applied after the plate has received the image. Any ink may be used provided is is repellant to the masking film. The film is preferably applied immediately or shortly before prints are to be made from the plate. The plate is coated with. an aqueous solution of a salt e.g. sodium and aluminium, of a carboxymethyl either of cellulose, to which an insolubilizing reagent is added, e.g. hydrochloric, sulphuric, or phosphoric acids or citric, tartaric, or tannic acids, so that the film which forms on the plate becomes permanently water insoluble. The film when dry forms a hydrophilic coating. In an alternative method the insolubilizing agent is initially omitted and the aqueous solution of a salt of a carboxymethyl either of cellulose is applied to the plate and dried. The film may subsequently be rendered insoluble by including in the wetting or fountain solution used when printing a precipitant salt such as aluminium sulphate and/or the insolubilizing reagent. The image may be typewritten on the plate prior to application of the masking film. The method may also be used to duplicate sheets already printed by using these as plates, after suitable treatment, and then applying the masking film.
