Class 100(2) Preliminary preparation of planographic plates: A planographic printing plate comprises a paper foundation; an image receptive hydrophilic background forming printing surface thereon, including a waterinsoluble copper compound of carboxymethyl cellulose; and an ink receptive water-repellant image on the printing.surface. The plate may be prepared by coating the paper base with an aqueous composition containing the water soluble carboxymethyl cellulose salt or compound dissolved therein, drying the coating, and then insolubilizing the resultant film by treatment with a solution of a precipitant or coagulant reagent containing a copper salt. Preferably two coatings are applied before the coagulant reagent is applied. The plate may also be provided before coating or after drying with a water resistant backing. The coating composition preferably includes an inert filler. e.g. colloidal clay, barium sulphate, calcium carbonate, and plastizers such as glycerine mav be included. Volatile alcohols may be included to accelerate drving. The metal derivative of carboxymethyl cellulose employed may include as well as the copper salt the aluminium salt, dissolved in'aqueous ammonia. The coagulent reagent mav contain copper sulphate aluminium sulphate, ferric chloride and chromium trioxide. Specification 766,532 is referred to. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 622.108.
