Abstract

812,508. Printing surfaces. DICK CO., A. B. April 1, 1957, No. 10632/57. Class 100(2) [Also in Group XX] A planographic printing plate comprises a base sheet, e.g. of paper, plastic sheet or metal strip, and a continuous, water insoluble lithographic surface layer on the base sheet in the form of a coating comprising the reaction product of the combination in admixture of an inert filler. polyacrylic acid and a bivalent metal oxide or hydroxide, and an ink receptive. water repellant, hydrophobic imaging material in the form of a mechanically applied image anchored on to the underlying continuous, water insoluble surface layer. The lithographic surface may be applied in a single coating, the coating composition including ammonia, a water soluble polyacrylic acid and an inert filler in combination with an oxide or a hydroxide of a bivalent metal capable of forming an insoluble salt with the polyacrylic acid but which remains soluble in the presence of sufficient ammonia in the form of ammonium hydroxide or a water soluble ammonia salt. In an example 180 parts by weight of clay and 18 parts by weight of zinc oxide are formed into a slurry with about 100 parts of water. 160 parts by weight of a 25 per cent water solution of polyacrylic acid is neutralized with 100 parts of concentrated ammonium hydroxide and the polyacrylic acid solution then combined with the slurry. The composition is then coated on to the base sheet in coating weight of about 8-10 pounds per 3,000 sq. ft. of surface and allowed to dry, preferably at an elevated temperature between 200-350"F. Instead of zinc oxide, magnesium oxide or hy- 'droxide or other alkaline earth metal. oxide or hydroxide, e.g. calcium oxide, lead oxide and barium oxide may be used. The clay may be replaced by other inert fillers such as diatomaceous earth, satin white, chalk, talc and silica. The ratio of inert filler to metal oxide is preferably within the range of 2:1 to 20:1 and the ratio of filler and metal oxide to polyacrylic acid within the range 2:1 to 10:1. Insolubility of the coating may be improved by the addition of water soluble bivalent metal salts, e.g. the chlorides and acetates of zinc, magnesium, nickel, cobalt, calcium and barium, from solutions containing the salt in amounts from 5.25 per cent by weight. The coating may be applied to a surface already coated with an insolublized hydrophilic colloid. For the production of presensitized photolithographic plates the coating is first applied on to a base sheet or on to a sheet already coated with an insolubilized hydrophilic colloid and a sensitizing coating then applied. The sensitizing solution may contain 1 per cent by weight of the diazolith compound, 5 per cent sodium acetate and 94 per cent water.
