Abstract

A lithographic printing plate is produced by applying to a base sheet, e.g. high wet strength paper, a surface coating, e.g. in the form of a dispersion in water, having a solids content of 50-75% by weight and containing an inert filler (e.g. clay), zinc oxide and an ammonia neutralized polymerised acrylic acid having an average molecular weight in excess of 60 000 and sufficient ammonium ion to maintain the acid in solution in the presence of the zinc oxide, and thereafter drying the coating on the base sheet at least to a non-tacky condition without direct physical contact of the exposed surface of the coating with the drying means whereby the evaporation of the liquid solvent of the coating is effected in a region away from the exposed surface of the coating to form a continuous hydraphilic water-insoluble lithographic surface. Drying may be effected by infra-red heaters and/or drum dryers, these latter only contacting the coating when this has been dried at least to a non-tacky condition, otherwise contacting the base sheet. The coating composition may contain 10-13% by weight of the polymerised acrylic acid and also a dispersing agent, e.g. sodium hexametaphosphate and may be applied to the base by blade coating. The base sheet may have one or two base coatings of inert filler (e.g. clay) starch, zinc oxide and melamine resin applied thereto at the rate of 6-9 pounds of dry solids of coating composition of a first coating per 3300 square feet of paper base surface and 3-4 pounds of a second coating per 3300 square feet of surface. The surface coating may be applied at the rate of at least 4 pounds of dry solids for 3300 square feet of surface. Other suitable supports for the lithographic surface may be fibreboard, textile fabrics, plastic sheet and metal strips.
