Abstract

Compositions comprise a protein adhesive, particularly casein or soya protein, and ammonium zirconyl carbonate, and in particular comprise an aqueous solution of a protein adhesive containing a sufficient amount of ammonium zirconyl carbonate to render the composition substantially insoluble in water when dry. The composition may also contain an inorganic pigment such as clay, calcium carbonate, blanc fixe, and satin white, and a minor amount of a styrene-butadiene latex, and may also include formic acid to increase the rate of the insolubilization reaction.ALSO:Water-resistant, water insoluble coated paper and coated paperboard may be prepared by applying to the surface to be coated an aqueous dispersion of a protein adhesive, particularly casein or soya protein, and ammonium zirconyl carbonate to form a coating thereon and drying the coating to render it substantially water insoluble. The coating composition may also contain an inorganic pigment such as clay, calcium carbonate, blanc fixe or satin white. In the production of coated paper the wet coated paper may be contacted with a heated finishing roll and maintained in contact therewith until it is wholly or partially dry. The coated paper or paperboard may be contacted with a dilute solution of formic acid prior to completion of the insolubilization reaction in order to accelerate this reaction. In an alternative process paper may be coated first with an aqueous dispersion of protein adhesive, an aqueous solution of ammonium zirconyl carbonate being then applied and the coating dried.
