Abstract

862,115. Coated paper. WARREN CO., S. D. Oct. 8, 1959, No. 34128/59. Class 96 Cast-surface or slip-finished mineral coated paper is made by directing steam against the coating to displace air, the heated, moist coating being thereupon pressed, e.g. by a rubber or rubber-covered roll 2 against the surface of e.g. a chromium-plated dryer drum 1. The steam may be supplied by a slitorifice nozzle 5 against the paper 3 or into the nip where a pool of water 6 may accumulate and/or water &c. may be supplied to the nip. If only water &c. is thus supplied, it is boiled vigorously by contact with the drum 1 to generate steam at the nip and prevent water, as well as air, from being carried through the nip. The temperature of the roll 1 may be 80‹ to 140‹ C. An Example (1) mentions a coating mix of clay, calcium carbonate, casein, styrenebutadiene latex, and sulphonated tallow as a release and anti-foam agent. Another Example (3) mentions a mineral coating mix superposed on a paper having a dry, base coat. The steam which may be super-heated or not may be directed against a wet or dry coating.
