Abstract

908,447. Manufacture of coated paper. WARREN CO., S. D. Feb. 29, 1960 [March 3, 1959], No. 7057/60. Class 96. Paper which may be rosin-sized and made from bleached hard and soft wood pulps and which may be starch-sized at a size press, or given a prime coating of oxidized starch and clay is dried, e.g. at over 150‹ F., as by passing it over heated drying cylinders and then cooling it, e.g. to below 110‹ F., and is then coated with an aqueous coating at the same rate as the paper is formed, e.g. as part of a continuous paper-making process. The coating mixture 40 may be supplied, as a pool, to the paper 36 at a resilient roll 34 as it passes a blade 38 urged towards the roll 34, coating-liquid pressure holding the blade at a distance from the paper so that streakiness does not occur, the solid coating B being built up at a distance C from the edge of the blade. The coater may be preceded by a water-cooled roll, felt doctors and an air blast ensuring that water condensation on the roll does not spoil the paper. The paper may be calendered after leaving the cooling roller and after final drying. The blade 38 may have a small roller along its edge.
