Abstract

499,732. Coating paper. CHAMPION PAPER & FIBRE CO. July 1, 1938, No. 19546. Convention date, June 10. [Classes 96 and 140] A travelling paper web 1, e.g. after passing through the last wet press 2 of a paper-making machine is coated by a roll 9, e.g. on the wire side with e.g. a clay, casein, and calcium carbonate suspension some of the water of the suspension being absorbed by the paper leaving a solid " filter cake." layer adhering to the paper, surplus suspension is scraped or wiped off by a blade 14, a rotating roll, or a thin rod, and the paper is then dried on drums 3 &c. and may be supercalendered and may be suitable for printing in fine half tone or colours. The felt side of the paper may be coated in the dryer section of the machine, and additional press rolls to equalize shrinkage due to drying, may precede the coating appliance or the paper may be coated subsequently to manufacture. The blade 14 may be rounded to <1>/16 inch radius and may be chromium plated, and is adjusted to and from the roll 9.
