Abstract

418,533. Coated paper webs. DEHN, F. B., 103, Kingsway, London.-(Seaman Paper Co. ; 410, North Michigan Avenue, Chicago, U.S.A.) Aug. 3, 1933, No. 21848. [Classes 96 and 140.] Paper for printing upon is made by applying a substantially dehydrated film of coating material to a web of moist paper pulp and drying the coated web. The coating apparatus 2, Fig. 1, may be in front of, between, or behind the wet presses of a Fourdrinier or cylinder machine or combination of these, the web being subsequently dried, calendered and reeled. In the Fourdrinier machine, the felts 23, 24 may be omitted. In a cylinder machine, webs from a number of moulds are received by a felt and turned back together with a top felt through preliminary press rolls ; the top felt may be turned back before reaching or after passing through the first wet press. One or both sides of the web may be coated. The web may be transferred from a Fourdrinier wire to the lower side of a wet press felt which passes through the couch press and the web united with that from a cylinder felt. In a Harper Fourdrinier machine, the web passes through a wet press to a preliminary drying roll and is then coated. The apparatus wherewith the coating material is mechanically worked, substantially dehydrated and applied to the web comprises troughs &c. 16, Fig. 1, supplying distributing rolls 17 and coating rolls 18, an aqueous suspension or solution, e.g. of calcium sulphate, barium sulphate, aluminium hydrate, magnesium carbonate, satin white, clay &c. being introduced through a pipe 85, Fig. 8, the level being maintained constant by a float 89 raising a plug 86 in a drain, the supply circulating the liquid in the trough. The liquid is raised by a roller 91 on a shaft 92 which may be journalled in the ends of the trough ; the thickness of the film being controlled by a doctor blade 93 which is adjusted by screws 95.
