Abstract

697,774. Wet presses of paper-making machines. HEYS, R. C. Nov. 15, 1951. [Nov. 16, 1950] No. 26749/51. Divided out of 697,338 Class 96. A web 4 from the wire-cloth 1 of a paper-making machine is couched at 5 and passes to a wet press comprising a lower suction press roll 9 and lower felt 10, and two upper press rolls 7, 8, bridged by a reversing-roll 13, e.g. of granite or bronze, or rubber-covered to smooth wire-marks from the web 4. The web 4 may be carried up to the press on an upper felt 6 or, in a modification on the lower press felt 10. Suction may be applied at 18 prior to the wet press nips, and at 14 to hold the web on the felt 6. A jet 16 of air or atomised water and a doctor 15 facilitate transfer of the web to the roll 8, and a spray pipe 17 may be used. High speed air from a compartment 19 clears the holes of the suction roll 9. A save-all tray 9a is provided. In modifications an additional plain or suction roll may aid in transferring the web to the dryer section or to a pre-drying, creping cylinder ; or there may be three upper press rolls with two bridging, reversing-rolls and a suction transfer roll.
