Abstract

697,338. Wet presses of paper-making machines. HEYS, R. C. Nov. 15, 1951. [Nov. 16, 1950] No. 28003/50. Class 96. Upper press rolls 8, Fig. 1, of a wet press of a paper-making machine are supported from a piston 4 at each end of each roll 8, the piston being moved hydraulically or pneumatically by fluid supplied at 15 or 16, above or below the piston in accordance with the setting of a valve 13 actuated by a hand-wheel 17, to increase or reduce the press pressure, or to raise the rolls 8 clear of the lower suction press roll 2. The cylinders 1 may be cast with the main bearing- housing 3, or they may be supported on pedestals &c. The invention is applicable to multiple presses as disclosed in Specification 617,280. Fig. 5 shows a paper web 21 couched at 22, passed through a multiple, wet press 24, 25, 26, 27, picked off by a suction roll 52 and passed to a pre-drying roll 53, from which it may be creped off by a doctor 57. In a modification, a smoothing press is interposed between the pickup roll and the pre-drying roll.
