Abstract
720,165. Couch presses of paper-making machines &c. WINTERBURN, J., and McNEILL, R. Dec. 24, 1951 [Sept. 26, 1950], No. 23506/50. Class 96. The web formed on the wire-cloth 1 of a Fourdrinier paper-making machine is picked off directly by a drying cylinder 9 or by a press roll, a backing roll 7 with a resilient surface aiding in the transfer of the web by reason of elongated pockets therein, wherein air is compressed and 'released as they pass through the nip. A blotter felt 10, washed by jets 14, and mangled at 13, 15 passes about a roll 11 &c. which may be a suction roll, to remove water at the approach side of its nip. The web may subsequently be crÛped, &c. In a modification, the web is couched at a downward run of the wire.
