In order to produce a smooth-surface fibrous crÛped web, a web from a wire-cloth 19, Fig. 1, of a Fourdrinier paper-making machine is couched at M, passed through the nip of a suction wet press 12 and crÛped off the upper press roll 26 by a doctor 31, the crÛped web falling on to a slower wet press felt 32 which carries it through a second wet press 13 where the web is flattened. The flattened web passes over dryer rolls 40, through a breaker stack having rubber-covered rollers 41, over further dryer rolls 42 and is reeled at 17. The crÛping and flattening and hot pressing cause the longitudinal fibres to be curved as illustrated in Fig. 11, i.e. convex upwardly at 55, concave at 56 and 'S' curved at 57 thereby increasing the longitudinal extensibility of the web. The web may include thermoplastic binders. In modifications, the wire-cloth 19 runs about a return roll, the web being taken off the stretch of the wire between the couch and return rolls with the aid of an air or water jet or by a suction pick-up roll: in the latter case, the web is creped from a lower, plain roll of the first wet press, the top roll of which is a suction roll.
