[Class 96] In a cylinder or Fourdrinier paper-making machine, the wet web A, Figs. 1 and 8, is transferred, by a displaceable suction roll 10 in advance of the axis of the couch roll 2, from the endless wire-cloth 1 to the press felt of a wet press comprising one or more suction rolls and one or more plain rolls beyond and spaced from the couch roll 2, transfer roll 10 and upper part of the wire-cloth 1. The web A passes over a suction couch roll 2, is transferred to a felt 12 bv the suction roll 10, meets a felt 13 and passes as shown in Fig. 1 between press rolls 4, 5, 6 arranged as described in Specification 458,756, to a dryer roll 17. A marking-roll M<1> may be used where shown for lightly marking the web. The transfer roll 10 may be rubber-covered and may be driven positively or from the felt, and is mounted, e.g. on counterbalanced levers swing away from the wire-cloth for wirechanging &c. In the arrangement shown in Fig. 8, roll 3 is omitted and two separate wet presses 4, 6 and 5a, 6a are used, each having a lower roll with two suction zones and an upper plain roll, each plain roll smoothing one side of the web. Synchronized drives as disclosed in Specifications 458,756 and 458,757 may be used. Different arrangements of the felts 12, 13 and of the wet presses are disclosed, e.g. both rolls of a second wet press may be plain. Specification 365,373 also is referred to.
