Abstract

664,049. Pattern-coated paper. NORTH AMERICAN PAPER PROCESS CO., Inc. Feb. 21, 1949 [Feb. 21, 1948], No. 4659/49. Class 96. A paper web, prior to final calendering, e.g. after partial drying at 15, Fig. 1, and pressing at a breaker stack 16, is coated by an intaglio roll 28 with a fine uniform pattern of spots of coating mixture too fine and close to be seen ordinarily as separate, dried by hot air at 37 and further dryer roll 38, and calendered so that the spots of coating are pressed into the paper surface which is thereby embossed so that the surface is substantially flat, or has slightly raised rims 25b, Fig. 6, formed round the spots 25a. Coating mixtures are of high solids content, and may include clay, and starch and soap, or casein and ammonia. There may be numbers of round spots, or a grid-pattern, or a chess-board pattern.
