Abstract

698,648. Mineral-coated paper and paper-board. CONSOLIDATED WATER POWER & PAPER CO. Sept. 26, 1951. No. 22489/51. Class 96. Paper-board 2 e.g. 0.02ins. thick, from the last roll 1 of the dryer section of a paper-making machine passes to a breaker-calender stack 3 at which one or more water-boxes (not shown) apply to rolls 4 a watersolution of e.g. converted starch, polyvinyl alcohol, polyacrylic acid, cart oxy-methyl or hydroxyethyl cellulose, the paper-board surface being then plastically worked and being then coated at 7 e.g. with clay, converted starch, and a little titanium dioxide, excess being doctored off at 8 and a second coating, e.g. of the same composition applied from gate rolls 13, applicator rolls 9, and impression rolls 5, the total thickness of the two coatings being e.g. less than 0.001in. The web is then dried by heated rolls 10 and by hot air from a hood 12, and is then calendered at 11. In a modified method, both applications of mineral coating mixture are made by impression and applicator rolls from a single pair of gate rolls.
