Abstract

728,203. Polyethylene and polyethylene-wax coated paper; coating webs. UNION CARBIDE & CARBON CORPORATION. Aug. 13, 1953 [Sept. 3, 1952], No. 22386/53. Class 140. The adhesion of extruded polyethylene or polyethylene and paraffin or microcrystalline wax mixture coatings which have been calendered on to paper is improved by heating the coated papers to 130-175‹ C. for not more than 10 seconds or to 110-150‹ C. for not more than 8 seconds, respectively. Paper 12 from roll 3 passes through coating rolls 4, 5 where polyethylene or polyethylene-wax mixture coating film 11, extruded from die 2, is applied. The coated paper is passed over revolving drum 6, which may be heated between 105‹ and 195‹ C., under bank of radiant heaters 13. The coated paper then passes through chilled rolls 7, 8 and 9 to wind up roll 10. Variation of paper speed, number and power of heaters and their distance from the coated paper, and of drum heating controls the heating process. Overheating causes pin-holes in the coating.
