Abstract

873,682. Mineral-coated paper. CONSOLIDATED WATER POWER & PAPER CO. Feb. 3, 1959 [Feb. 28, 1958], No. 3761/59. Class 96. A web of paper 10, e.g. from the final dryer drums 11 of a Fourdrinier paper-making machine &c. and which may be porous and may contain 15% of mineral filler, may be calendered at 12 between stainless steel or chilled iron rolls, passes over a roll 13 and between resilientsurfaced applicator rolls 14 of a print or transfer type of coater, which apply a preliminary mineral coating, e.g. under a line pressure of up to 150 lb. per inch. The web may be dried at 20 to a moisture content of 5 to 8% and may again be calendered at 21 and be guided by rolls 22 to a resilient surfaced roll 23 on which it passes through a pool 24 of coating mixture, excess of which is doctored off by a flexible blade 26. The web may be again dried to 5 to 8% moisture by one or more rolls 27 which may be aided by infra-red lamps or air jets. The other surface of the web may then be coated at 24<SP>1</SP>, excess doctored off at 261 and further dried by drums 29, 30 and by lamps or air jets, if needed. The web may be reeled and supercalendered, e.g. at 1300 lb. per linear inch or less, the low pressure producing paper of good opacity. The base coating mix may include clay, enzyme-converted starch, ammonium stearate and tetrasodium pyrophosphate, &c. The top coat may contain more expensive ingredients, e.g. fluorescent dyes, titanium dioxide, styrene-butadiene latex, &c.
