Abstract

522,196. Coated paper. K-C-M. CO. Sept. 2, 1938, No. 25727. Convention date, March 21. [Class 96] Coated paper, e.g., mineral coated printing paper, is made by forming a wet paper web, drying to a pre-determined moisture content, e.g., 5 to 38 per cent. and calendering at a pressure which consolidates the body of the web to such an extent 'that it is unaffected by the subsequent calendering. A smooth coating is applied to the paper which is again calendered: As illustrated the web from the second wet press is pre-treated with mineral material, e.g., as described in Specifications 396,063 and 428,974. or from a trough 32, at a press 30, 31 as described in Specification 486,943, partially dried on rolls 35, and pressed by rolls 40, 41 which may be cooled to allow moisture to condense on them and may exert a pressure of 700 lbs. per sq. in. of nip area. The paper is further dried on rolls 50, e.g., to 5-10 per cent. and coated at a press 60, 61, the upper roll being sprayed with and the lower partly immersed in coating mixture, both rolls being driven; it may then pass about further dryers 70 and be calendered at 80 at pressures up to 1,430 lbs. per lineal inch of calender roll. In an example book paper is made from a furnish of sulphite, soda, old paper and broke pulps, with 30 per cent. calcium carbonate filler. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to U.S.A. Specification 1,964,312.
