522,880. Artificial leather: felted fibrous board. D.C.R., Ltd. March 10, 1939, No. 7834. Convention date, March 11, 1938. [Class 96] Felted sheets or webs containing leather fibres and which may contain up to 90 per cent. of rag pulp, kraft, sulphite, newsprint, ground wood, or cattle hair, sawdust, asbestos, or wool, is steamed at or above atmospheric pressure or immersed in boiling water to cause the material to swell in thickness; longitudinal and lateral shrinkage may be restrained by confining between wire cloths. The leather which may have been shredded dry in a hammer mill may be beaten 4-10 hrs., and fillers, rosin size, wax dispersions, asphalt emulsions, alkali, e.g., lime,. or acid, e.g., acetic, tannic, sulphuric, or hydrochloric, may be added. The product which may be impregnated with asphalt, wax, shellac, artificial resin, rubber latex &c. and may be porous or compressed, may be used as a dielectric, for wallboard, or for mats or pads. In an example a sheet 3/16 inch thick, from a makeup roll is steamed 15 to 30 mins. and yields a sheet 1¢-2 inches thick.
