Abstract

870,224. Coated polyethylene film. LOWE PAPER CO. May 23, 1957 [May 24, 1956], No. 5321/61. Divided out of 868,924. Class 140. Sheet material comprising coated polyethylene is prepared by conveying polyethylene film continuously first through an activating zone in which the film is subjected to a surface activation treatment and then through a coating zone in which an hydrophilic coating is applied to the activated polyethylene surface. The term " surface activation " denotes any surface treatment by which the surface characteristics of the polyethylene are modified so that the surface bonds more strongly to hydrophilic substances or more polar when these are applied thereto and includes heat treatment such as with an open flame, oxidation treatments e.g. exposure to ozone, chlorine, certain acids and/or electron bombardment. The hydrophilic coating may comprise starch, carboxymethyl cellulose or a protein e.g. gelatin or casein. Molten polyethylene may be extruded into the form of a film, which may be united to a backing of another material, e.g. paper or boxboard, and then passed through the activating and coating zones. As shown, web of paper 36 is coated with molten polyethylene extruded in the form of a film into the nip formed between roller 37 and cooling drum 38. The exposed polyethylene surface is heated to a high temperature and oxidized by gas burner 40 and then coated with a polar e.g. aqueous pigmented adhesive solution, which is to form the hydrophilic coating, transferred from roller 42 in the nip formed between rollers 42 and 43.
