Abstract

990,363. Coating apparatus. EASTMAN KODAK CO. Dec. 11, 1961 [Dec. 12, 1960], No. 44166/61. Heading D1L. [Also in Divisions B2 and B6] A process for hot melt coating comprises coating a hot melt coating on to a substrate to be coated, and contacting the coating against a chilled roll whose surface has been uniformly coated with steam sufficient to deposit a thin aqueous film thereon. As shown paper substrate passes round an idler roller 13 to coating roll 1 which applies hot melt coating 8. Roll 1 has a doctoring blade 11 and a rod 10 is provided to smooth the coating. The coated paper passes an idler roller 12 and around chilled roller 2 which has steam projected on to the surface thereof from a perforated steam pipe 6. In another embodiment sheets of paper are fed between a coating roll and an impression roll where the hot melt, applied by a heated spatula knife to the coating roll, is transferred to the paper. The coated paper then passes between the impressing roll and a refrigerated embossing roll to the surface of which steam is applied from a perforated pipe as in previous embodiment. The steam produces a thin water film on the chilled roller and thus prevents sticking of the coating to the roll. Specification 990,634 is referred to.
