Abstract

974,497. Coating webs; pressure-sensitive record sheets. MEAD CORPORATION. June 5, 1961 [June 8, 1960],No. 20246/61. Headings D1L and D2B. Pressure-sensitive record sheets are made by applying an aqueous dispersion of oil-containing, pressure-rupturable, microscopic capsules and cellulose fibres to a moving web, distributing the dispersion over the surface of the web and then drying the film on the web. The dispersion is distributed by a reverse-turning spread shaft which has a surface speed which is greater in magnitude than and opposite in direction from the movement of the web and is sufficient to produce a film of uniform thickness. As shown, a web of paper 10 is unwound from a roll 11, is passed over and under rolls 12 and 13 to applicator roll 16, which applies coating 15. The paper then passes under bar 17, over reverse-turning roll 18 and round roll 19 where the coating is metered by air knife 20. It then passes over the guide rolls 24 and 25 and spread shafts 22 and 23 which are turned in a direction and at a speed as defined above, and so to a drier (not shown). The spread shafts 22 and 23 and roll 18 are surfaced with a smooth, non- wettable material, e.g. polytetrafluorethylene, brass or hard rubber.
