Abstract

1,151,690. Coating paper. APPLETON COATED PAPER CO. 18 Aug., 1967, No. 38134/67. Heading D1L. Liquid coating material is applied to an endless web 10 or paper by shearing action from an applicator roll 16 fed with material by a pick-up roll 22 in a liquid-containing pan 26, excess material being removed from the applicator roll by the shearing action of a metering roll 20 in a second .pan 44. The material may be fed from the pick-up roll by shearing or split film action. The coated web passes over a breast roll 40 and a small amount of coating material is removed by an air-knife 42. A blade 36 removes lint, &c., from the applicator roll after the coating of the web. Each roll has a separate drive and the pick-up and metering rolls are movable to vary the nip with the applicator roll. The peripheral speed of the applicator roll may be 1/3 - 2 times that of the web. The peripheral speeds of the pick-up and metering rolls may be respectively 1/6-1 and 1/18 - 1/3 times that of the applicator roll. Coating may be effected at 1,500 ft/min. The material may be a pressure-sensitive aqueous emulsion.
