Abstract

1332143 Precision deposition M LOWENSTEIN & SONS Inc 16 Dec 1970 [17 Dec 1969] 59804/70 Heading D1L A method of coating an interstice containing textile substrate on one side only comprises the steps of feeding the substrate in a smooth flat condition to a roll type applicator unit at a predetermined speed; engaging the substrate with a roll means prior to application of the composition, said roll means being preset with respect to the applicator to limit the degree of contact between the substrate and the applicator; applying a metered amount of a coating composition onto one side only of the substrate without forcing any of the composition through the substrate to the opposite side; on controlling the visocsity of the composition, the tension in the substrate and the applicator during application of the composition passing the substrate over an evening means and immediately thereafter under a further roll means, said evening means and said roll means being prearranged and combining to evenly distribute the composition on said one side of the substrate and meter off any excess composition therefrom; and after said evenly distributed coating has been produced passing the substrate to a drying region without further contact to said one side of the substrate. The substrate may be contacted on one side only during the application of the composition. The substrate is preconditioned to a moisture content of not more than about 50% by weight before being fed to the applicator. The substrate component alignment is accomplished by wrapping the substrate approximately 90‹ around a slat expander during substrate travel to the applicator. The substrate S is fed from roll 10 to an accumulator 20 which comprises a series of guide rolls 22. After being subjected to initial warp tension regulation 24 substrate S is treated on its top side by a vacuum extractor 26 and then by a barrel or slat expander 28. The substrate then passes into a nip 33, produced by rollers 31 and 32. The direct gravure applicator unit 30 comprises a box 34, an applicator roll 32, an impression roll 31 and a metering blade 35. The substrate then passes over guide roller 38 which reverses the substrate surface and it then passes to the applicator unit 40 which comprises an applicator roll 42 on the upstream side is an adjustable metering blade 43 while on the downstream side an adjustable scraper blade 44. Composition evening means 47 may be an adjustable blade. The dancer roll 50 is operatatively associated with roll 32 of nip 33 through a suitable servo mechanism to adjust the speed of roll 32 and thereby retain constant tension on substrate S. Should substrate S become tight at dancer roll 50, the latter is moved toward unit 40. The substrate S then passes to the drying zone e.g. a tenter frame 70. Figs. 2 to 6 show different forms of applicator units, namely a direct kiss coat applicator, a kiss coat applicator with Meyer rods 305 used to even the composition across the surface of the substrate S, a direct gravure unit with etched applicator roll 402, a reversed kiss coat applicator and a flexographic applicator unit respectively.
