Abstract

894,073. Coating webs. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. Oct. 14, 1960 [Oct. 28, 1959], No. 35364/60. Class 140. A method of coating a web 1 to obtain a desired thickness comprises continuously moving the web under and in contact with a roll 2, applying a stream of coating material at a locus 5 on the web while the web is in contact with the roll, and spreading the coating into a thin, confined layer 13 extending over 30 to 100 degrees of arc of the roll. The coating material, e.g. a photographic emulsion, is fed to a reservoir 6 at one or both ends and emerges through one or more longitudinal slots 5 to the space between the roll 2 and an arcuate shoe 3, the coating material being supplied at a rate sufficient at least to provide an overflow from the end 8 of the shoe. An air doctor 9 may be provided and the end 8 of the shoe 3 may be used as a doctor, excess coating material being collected in a trough 11 from which it may be recirculated. The spacing between the roll 2 and the shoe 3 may be 0.01 to 0.10 inches, and the slots 5 may be 0.02 to 0.25 inches wide. The layer 13 may be applied to a wet coating 12 on the web.
