Abstract

901,683. Coating webs. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO., E. I. Oct. 19, 1960 [Nov. 4, 1959], No. 35873/60. Class 140. An apparatus for applying a smooth coating, e.g. of a gelatine emulsion or solution, to a moving web 10 comprises means for applying a coating of at least twice the desired wet thickness (x), an air knife 7, 8 for directing a stream of air to impinge at a line 11 transverse to the coated web 10, and a rod or taut wire 9 of diameter d parallel to the line 11 and below the knife 7, 8 at distances p, q, indicated on the Figure, d being 4x to 20x, p being x to 6x, and q being d to 5d, i.e. 4x to 100x. In one example, in which a gelatine silver idiobromide emulsion was applied to a web moving at 150 feet per minute, d equalled 0.063 inch, p equalled 0.006 inch, and q equalled 0.12 inch, and in another example employing a gelatine solution, d was 0.037 inch, p 0.02 inch, and q 0.1 inch. The coating is applied by passing the web about a roll which makes skim contact with the coating liquid in a trough. More than one rod or wire may be employed and may be non- circular in cross-section, e.g. tear-drop, and instead of air, steam, nitrogen or helium may be employed in the knife 7, 8. Both sides of the web may be coated and doctored, e.g. by employing the apparatus described in U.S.A. Specification 2,423,768. U.S.A. Specification 2,139,628 also is referred to.
