Abstract

1,059,206. Web coating apparatus. E. I. DU PONT DE NEMOURS & CO. April 13, 1965 [April 13, 1964], No. 15818/65. Heading D1L. An air knive for smoothing and removing excess of a liquid layer coated on web materials comprises an elongate chamber 22 formed with a gaseous fluid supply inlet and a longitudinal exit slot 23, a pair of lip members 24 having their inner ends adjacent said slot and secured to the chamber, at least one of said members being slidably secured, and having their outer ends forming a narrow orifice 25, and a row of adjusting bolts 36 extending between the lip members, rotation of which adjusts the width of the orifice 25. The lip members 24 are preferably secured by screws 34 which pass through elongated holes to allow the lip members to be adjusted and the bolts 36 have each end threaded in the same direction but at a different pitch to give micrometric adjustment of the orifice 25. In one application, Fig. 1 (not shown), the air knife is used in conjunction with coating apparatus in which a moving web 11 passes continuously around a guide roll 12 there being associated with this roll, an arcuate coating shoe 13 to which coating material is fed from a reservoir 16 via a slot 15. Excess coating material flows over the edges 17, 18 of shoe 13 and returns to a trough 21.
