Abstract

1,274,824. Coating webs. J. M. VOITH G.m.b.H. 19 Feb., 1970 [19 Feb., 1969], No. 7984/70. Heading D1L. A paper web is coated from below, during passage over a backing roll, with a coating material fed from a vessel 10 having flared lips 12 forming an extrusion orifice 11 and having cut-away portions 16 of the lips and slidably adjustable end pieces 17 having an end wall 18 and a pair of lips 19 conforming to the lips 12. The position of the end pieces defines the width of the orifice 11 and excess coating material flows out of the parts of the cut-away portions not covered by the end pieces 17. Only one of the lips 12 may be cut away and a deflector plate may be attached to the outside of the end wall 18 (25), Fig. 3 (not shown). The apparatus is pivotally mounted and preferably arranged with the downstream lip making an acute angle with the web and the upstream lip approximately perpendicular thereto. The coating material may be pressure fed to the vessel 10 and excess material from the cut-away portions recycled. Bores or slits in the lips 12 may be substituted for the cut-away portions 16. A discharge valve may be provided in the vessel 10.
