Abstract

The process serves for coating a web of material, in particular a paper web, on both sides with a coating composition. The web (1) is passed upwards through a gap formed by two coating elements (2, 3) adjustable relative to one another. The coating composition is fed under pressure through outlet orifices (12, 13) in the coating elements. The surfaces of the coating elements (2, 3) resting on the web (1) are offset away from one another in the longitudinal direction of the web and offset relative to one another in the direction from one surface of the web to the other, so that the web is deflected like a wave when passing the coating elements. The feed of the coating composition is controlled in such a way that a bead (20, 21) of coating composition forms on each side of the web in front of the wave-like deflection. The process ensures uniform application of a layer to the web and prevents disadvantageous effects of irregularities in the form of the coating elements. <IMAGE>
