Abstract

The smoothing appliance is for use with a fusible coating material of high viscosity, on paper, cardboard, synthetic or textile. The carrier is coated with a layer of average thickness (Em) which is larger than the desired thickness (Ef) of the final layer. The coated carrier is passed between two rollers, which turn in opposite directions, spaced apart vertically so that a roll (M) of coating material is formed at the tip. This roll, in contact with the heated first roller, forms a hydrodynamic wedge of liquid coating material, which during smoothing supplies the carrier continuously and uniformly. The thickness of the final layer is controlled by the relative contact pressure between the rollers.
