Abstract

1,113,695. Transferring designs. LETRASET Ltd. 20 Oct., 1965 [30 Oct., 1964; 14 May, 1965], Nos. 44384/64 and 20497/65. Heading B6C. Indicia is applied to successive receptor surfaces, e.g. polythene bottles, by means of a tape fed from a reel and carrying ink indicia successively printed along its length, the indicia being partially released from the tape before application to the article by locally stretching the tape. The stretching may be effected by drawing the unprinted side of the tape over a surface of small radius or a serrated surface such as a bar having a helical thread or cylindrical ridges. Alternatively, the tape may pass between successive rolls driven at different speeds to tension it. An adhesive to cause the indicia to adhere to the receptor surface may be incorporated in the ink or cover the ink on the tape, or may be applied to the tape after the partial release of the indicia or to the receptor surface. When the adhesive is present on or in the indicia it is preferably non-tacky but is capable of being activated by pressure, or heat, or a solvent. The solvent may be applied either to the tape after partial release of the indicia, or to the receptor surface. For the tape, a light-transmitting film may be employed. Among the materials which may be used for the tape are various polymeric materials, paper, cardboard, metal foils, paper laminates and coated papers. A number of examples of suitable clear and coloured inks, and adhesives are given. Before use, the printed side of the tape may be covered by a protective strip of cellulosic material such as kraft paper, glassine paper, or vegetable parchment paper, having a coating on its face adjacent to the indicia which allows the strip to be readily released from the tape. An apparatus, Fig. 2, for applying the indicia comprises a tape supply roll 12, and a tape rewind roll 17, the latter being driven. The tape first passes over rolls 13, 14, and then the protective strip is separated and guided by rollers 15, 16 to the wind-up roll 17. The tape passes over (a) a bar 18 of small radius to effect partial release of the indicia, and (b) a roller 19 or a platen which applies the tape against the receptor surface. The articles to be marked are conveyed one by one beneath the apparatus which is reciprocated in the direction of motion of the articles to apply the indicia to the articles in turn. A simpler hand-manipulated apparatus, Fig. 1 (not shown), for applying the indicia is also described.
