Abstract

A method for coating a flexible travelling web with a liquid coating composition comprises coating a first side of the web, removing excess composition therefrom, coating the second side of the web, and removing excess coating therefrom by an air knife while the web is supported, first coated side downwards, on a cushion of gaseous sodium. The coating is preferably applied by applicator rolls the excess coating being removed by an air knife. The cushion of gaseous medium is preferably formed by means of a tube having several axially extending, circumferentially spaced rows of perforations through which the gas, e.g. air is pumped, Fig. 2 (not shown). The coated web is then passed through a dryer, preferably heated by infra-red heaters, and wound in a roll. The web may be paper, film of cellulosic material such as regenerated cellulose, cellulose esters and ethers, and other cellulosic derivatives or films of synthetic plastics materials such as polyethylene, polypropylene, polyamides, polyvinyl derivatives and the like. The coating composition may comprise moisture-proof, heat-sealable compositions of aqueous dispersions of vinylidene chloride copolymers.
