Abstract

902,664. Coated films. LOWE PAPER CO. Oct. 24, 1958 [Oct. 25, 1957], No. 34163/58. Addition to 868,924. Class 140. Sheet material comprising coated polyolefinic material is prepared by extruding homopolymers of aliphatic monoethylenic unsaturated hydrocarbons or copolymers of two or more such unsaturated hydrocarbons, other than polyethylene, to form a film, and applying a hydrophilic coating to a surface of the hot film immediately on its emergence from the extrusion orifice. The film former may be formed by polymerization of one or more lower alkene monomers, either straight or branched chain, such as polypropylene, polyalphabutylene, polyisopropyl propylene or polyisopropyl butene. The hydrophilic substance may be starch, " Methocel," (Registered Trade Mark), carboxymethyl cellulose, polyvinyl alcohol or acetate, or a protein, e.g. gelatin or casein, which may be mixed with other substances, e.g. pigments. The film may be united with a backing, e.g. paper, boxboard, kraft paper, cloth, foil or " Cellophane " (Registered Trade Mark), at the side remote from the hydrophilic coating. The backing may be continuously extrusion coated with the polyolefinic material and the hydrophilic coating continuously applied to the hydrophilic coating as this is applied to the backing. The hydrophilic substance may be filmed on to a drum and the polyolefinic material extruded into the nip formed between this drum and a roller so that the hydrophilic substance is transferred in the nip from the drum to the hot extruded polyolefinic film. The hydrophilic substance may be applied to the drum as an aqueous solution, the water being evaporated therefrom as it travels on the drum towards said nip. The hydrophilic coating may be subjected to a brushing or buffing operation.
