Abstract

903,350. Coated sheet material. LOWE PAPER CO. Oct. 24, 1958 [Oct. 25, 1957], No. 14889/62. Divided out of 902,664. Addition to 870,224. Class 140. Sheet material comprising coated polyolefinic material, other than polyethylene, is prepared by conveying a film of the material continuously first through an activating zone in which the film is subjected to a surface-activation treatment and then through a coating zone in which a hydrophilic coating is applied to the activated surface. The expression " polyolefinic material " is defined as homopolymers of aliphatic monoethylenic unsaturated hydrocarbons and copolymers of two or more such unsaturated hydrocarbons, such as one or more lower alkene monomers, either straight or branched chain, e.g. polypropylene, polyalphabutylene, polyisopropyl propylene and polyisopropyl butene. The surface activation treatments include heat treatment with an open flame, exposure to ozone, chlorine, certain acids and/or electron bombardment. The hydrophilic coating may comprise starch, carboxymethyl cellulose, " Methocel " (Registered Trade Mark), proteins, e.g. gelatine, soybean protein, or casein, polyvinyl alcohol or acetate. Molten polyolefinic material may be extruded to form a film which may be continuously surface-activated and coated. The film as passed through the zones may be united with a backing of another material, e.g. paper, boxboard, kraft paper, cloth or " Cellophane " (Registered Trade Mark). The backing material may be continuously extrusion-coated with the polyolefinic material prior to the activation and coating. The extrusion coating may be performed by feeding the backing material into a nip formed between a drum and a roller, into which nip the polyolefinic material is extruded. The hydrophilic coating may also contain pigments, clay, fillers, and butadiene-styrene. The coating may be subsequently subjected to a brushing or buffing operation.
