Abstract

956,384. Laminates and laminating. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Feb. 2, 1962 [Feb. 15, 1961], No. 5635/61. Drawings to Specification. Heading B5N. Paper is glossed by continuously forming a laminate of which the outer layers are a continuous web of paper or board and a smoothsurfaced film of a thermoplastic organic polymeric material or metal foil and the intermediate layer is a mineral pigment/adhesive binder paper coating composition either in the form of an aqueous dispersion or a damp coating on the web, drying the laminate, and stripping off the film or foil from the laminate, there being at least 2.5 parts by weight of pigment to each part of adhesive binder in the composition. Suitable films include polyethylene terephthalate, polymethyl methacrylate, nylon, polypropylene, regenerated cellulose, and aluminium foil. The mineral pigment may be clay, blanc fixe, satin white, talc, calcium carbonate, titanium dioxide, or ultramarine. The adhesive binder may be casein, soya protein, starch, glue, copolymer of butadiene-1,3 and styrene and/or methyl methacrylate, copolymers of vinyl acetate, homopolymers of lower alkyl esters of acrylic acid, and copolymers of lower alkyl esters of acrylic acid with a copolymerizable monoethylenically unsaturated compounds. The laminate may be dried by passing it through a zone maintained at at least 50‹ C. (in an example above 60 ‹ C.), followed by stripping off the film. In one process, the coating composition is applied as a substantially uniform layer to a continuously advancing web of paper or board, and the thus-coated web is brought into contact with a continuously advancing film or foil between a pair of rollers. Alternatively, continuously advancing webs of paper or board and film pass through the nip of rotating rolls, there being maintained in the nip a well of the coating composition. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 916,753.
