Abstract
1,241,177. Adhesive coated wall covering. COMBINED PAPER MILLS, Inc. 19 June, 1968 [20 June, 1967; 22 May, 1968], No. 29144/68. Heading B2E. [Also in Division D2] A wall covering comprises a flexible base stock having an adhesive material applied directly to the surface which faces and comes into contact with the wall to which the wall covering is applied or to a barrier coating thereon, the adhesive material being partially e.g. 10-20%, in encapsulated form with the remainder of the adhesive material not being capsulated, and being tackifiable by the application of heat and/or pressure, without the need to moisten the adhesive material, the adhesive being heat-activatable at between 175‹F and the scorching temperature of the base stock. The adhesive may be present from 16 to 18lb. per 3000 sq. ft. of base stock. The adhesive may be reactivatable by heat and/or pressure after a first activation by heat and/or pressure, so as to permit stripping of the base stock from a wall at a subsequent time. The adhesive may contain a plasticizer. The adhesive coating may be applied in a liquid carrier e.g. water, and the coated stock subsequently dried. The adhesive coating may be applied to paper stock by forming a pool of the liquid-carried adhesive material between an applicator roll and a supporting roll during the paper making process, the applicator roll being rotated at a lower peripheral speed than the supporting roll, and the supply of liquid coating to the pool being carried out at a rate which, in conjunction with the speeds of the web and applicator roll, will substantially eliminate turbulence and splashing of the coating in the pool. The pool may be formed between the breaker stack and drier section of a paper-making machine. Alternatively, the adhesive may be applied to air-knife coating. The barrier coating e.g. of styrene-butadiene latex and kaolin clay, may be present from 8 to 10 lbs. per 3000 sq. ft of the base stock. The covering is positioned on the receiving wall, the dry adhesive material is activated and the covering caused to adhere to the wall by placing a heat and/or pressure source into contact with the exposed surface of the covering. Moisture may be added to the base stock, as contrasted to the adhesive, prior e.g. immediately prior, to placing the covering on the receiving wall. Covering using a retackifiable adhesive may be removed from a wall be placing on heat and/or pressure source into contact with the exposed surface so as to retackify the adhesive and stripping the covering from the wall while the adhesive is in that state. The base stock may be of paper, cloth, wood veneer, synthetic plastics or combinations thereof.
