Abstract

962,123. Laminating. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Oct. 26, 1962 [Nov. 17, 1961], No. 41221/61. Heading B5N. [Also in Division B2] A coating composition 5 is deposited on the surface of a paper or paper board substrate 1 and is given a smooth or glossy surface by contact with a smooth surfaced thermoplastic organic polymeric film 4 at a temperature of at least 80‹ C., after which the film 4 is separated from the coated surface, the organic polymeric film being subjected to a temperature of at least 80‹ C. before contacting the coating composition. In an example, the film 4, e.g. polyethylene terephthalate preheated to a temperature of 100 ‹ C. to 120 ‹ C. and paper 1 are passed between nip rollers 2, 3, and into the nip between the angle formed by the film and paper is fed an aqueous dispersion comprising 65 parts by weight vinyl chloride/vinyl acetate (16%) copolymer and 35 parts by weight butadiene (30%)/methyl methacrylate copolymer. The sandwich thus formed is heated in an infra-red drying chamber 6 at a temperature of above 80‹ C. after which the film 4 is separated from the coated surface and heated by a roller 8 to 125‹ C. The coating composition may be a dispersion formed from china clay, casein, and copolymer of butadiene-1,3 and methyl methacrylate. Specification 551,440 is referred to.
